AUDITION NOTICE

for The Gentleman Clothier by Norm Foster

ABOUT THE SHOW

The Gentleman Clothier is a charming, time-bending comedic play by prolific Canadian playwright Norm Foster. It follows Norman Davenport, a stuffy, old-fashioned tailor who opens a high-end menswear shop in modern times but wishes for a simpler era — resulting in a magical, hilarious journey across the centuries.  The play blends romance, workplace comedy, and light fantasy across a highly entertaining structure.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Auditioners will be asked to read a selection from the play and will be given some direction as to how to approach the piece. (Please note that you may be cast for any of the parts, not just the one you read)

CONFLICTS

  • Auditioners are required to provide a full list of conflicts on the audition sign up form. Please be as complete as possible, especially around holidays.

  • If there are changes in conflicts during the audition process, please inform us, or bring an updated conflict list to the audition and/or callbacks.

  • The callbacks and rehearsal schedule will take into consideration the conflicts identified at the time of your audition.

  • Adding more conflicts after casting may result in removal from the show.

CALLBACKS

  • Individuals invited to callbacks will be given a schedule specific to the characters for which they are being considered; this schedule will be communicated to each performer via email.

  • Those auditioning should inform the production team at the time of their first audition, if there is any time on the callback day during which they are unavailable. Please note that though we will try, we may not be able to accommodate all conflicts for callbacks.

  • Those called back will be asked to prepare specific scenes from the show. Lines do not need to be memorised but actors should be familiar enough with the material to take redirection and “play” with the scenes. These will be sent along with callback notifications and will be available for preview online ahead of time.

CASTING INFORMATION

All roles are open to consideration regardless of age, background, ethnicity or sexual/gender orientation.

  • Norman Davenport - (40’s - 50’s) A skilled, somewhat arrogant, and stuffy tailor who longs for the turn of the 20th century, believing it to be a simpler, more polite time. He is fastidious about language and class, but ironically possesses surprisingly modern views on issues like sexual orientation and divorce. Owner of a “very classy operation” men’s shop. (C, E)

  • Sophie Tomesko - (25) An exuberant, rough-around-the-edges, and fiercely independent young woman who barges into Norman's shop and convinces him to hire her as a tailor. She is a lesbian, heavily relies on a punk-inspired aesthetic, and brings a sharp, street-smart perspective to Norman's traditional world. (C, E)

  • Patrick Markham - (30’s - 50’s)  A man desperately in need of a job to support his ailing daughter. He talks his way into a job as the shop’s handyman and stock person, but hides a deep, dark secret. (C, E, L)

  • Alisha Sparrow - (30’s - 50’s)  A wealthy, sophisticated high-society socialite and the shop's very first customer. Norman becomes immediately smitten with her, which profoundly complicates his life and serves as a catalyst for his magical wish to travel back in time. (C, E)
